Block Work Design Improvement

Block Work Design Improvement

The Tahadiy program at ALEC continues to drive innovative solutions, with one notable implementation from last year focusing on blockwork design improvements. This initiative aimed to explore alternatives to conventional RC elements like stiffener posts, lintels, and mid-beams, making the existing system more efficient. The challenge was to minimize the use of concrete elements in block walls, thereby enhancing construction efficiency.

Concrete blockwork represents a significant portion of construction costs and efforts. The goal was to replace traditional RC elements in blockwork with innovative solutions. The project team collaborated with an external design consultancy firm to propose design changes that would reduce the number of stiffener posts, lintels, and mid-beams. This effort culminated in a comprehensive study and information submission for one of the ALEC projects, which was ultimately approved. For instance, the revised design showed that no band beams were required for 150mm thick hollow block walls up to 4.5 meters and 200mm thick hollow block walls up to 5.5-6.5 meters, unlike the usual requirement for a band beam at 3 meters height.

The scope of work involved a detailed study of the ALEC project block layouts to identify areas for design changes, followed by a comprehensive information submission for consultant approval. The accomplishments of this initiative were significant, including higher labor productivity, lower costs due to reduced need for formwork and scaffolding, and a 17% reduction in rates from the conventional design.

Beyond financial benefits, the new design also improved the quality of blockwork construction by reducing the joints between reinforced concrete and blocks. Additionally, the time savings achieved by applying the new design compared to conventional methods helped avoid delays, ensuring more efficient project completion.

The success of this blockwork design improvement underscores the impact of the Tahadiy program in driving efficiency and innovation in construction practices at ALEC. By continuously exploring and implementing innovative solutions, ALEC enhances its competitive edge while delivering greater value to clients and optimizing internal processes.
